It's Not Quite Catharsis, But It'll Do For Now

Unwritten

In those days, there was less of me, and more of everyone else. I was a shadow, a sliver, an unimportant cameo in movies starring everyone else. I was the disembodied narrator, recording, remembering, unspoken commentary lining the walls of my skull.

Eternal Step

Music bounces off the walls of an abandoned house, following the fading chime of distant anklets, desperately seeking a way out. Music twists and struggles at the exits in a deadly fight for survival against invisible, final barriers. A dancer's form silhouetted in the distance, framed by the light of a super moon. Shorn of anklets, cleaved from the orphaned music, alone it bends gracefully to the steps of the unknown. Unaware that somewhere far away, its death knell has already been sung. And as all life fades from the forest, as a world closes in on itself, echoes of the song remain only to haunt the dreams of a sleeping god.

Throwback: The Room of Tapestries

Image
I stand bewildered in the Room of Tapestries, and watch as looms of Fate weave the courses of lives. I wonder if it's worth anything to try and find the lines of my life among the invisible threads that crisscross all around me. Photo by Javid Naderi on Unsplash I settle myself on the floor, cross-legged, and look up at the open sky above. The room has no ceiling, for reasons long since forgotten. Outside, the last glimmers of sunset disappear behind a moss-covered hill. Lady Night spreads her mantle over the sleeping world. The humming in the Room of Tapestries becomes louder, more noticeable. The clack-clack of the many shuttles becomes faster, accelerating the rhythm of twilight into resonance with the night. The threads of a billion fates glitter in the moonlight above me. No longer invisible, they float like eerie insects on jeweled wings. I gaze up and up, till where the walls of the Room blend gently in with the indigo ceiling, studded with stars. A billion wis...

Throwback: Crown For A Penny

Crossposted. October 1, 2010. Yesterday, you sat beside me as I cried. Today, there's no one to hold me as I cry. And that is how I know you're still alive. Because every minute of my days, you're a hole in the world, floating softly next to me, filling my dreams and fantasies, and all my waking hours. I feel myself giving slowly in to the pressure. An evil imp insists that I take the plunge, but I know that even as I slice into the blue depths of the pool, there will be no water to caress my sore skin, to soothe the aching pain that afflicts me. What can I say, except that you walked away on a moonlit night? That the strange loud music in the background drowned out the sound of my heart breaking. What can I say, except that I had no choice but to break the circle to keep myself sane? Princesses know the duties they owe State and people. Royalty from around the world courts us with gifts unimaginable, with more flowers than our castles can hold, with more l...

Thanks for the Scams

Social media doesn't determine my worth. It doesn't determine yours either. It's literally the most superficial, shallow thing to ever exist. Even so, I've always loved social media, from back before Facebook and even Orkut. All the way back to a little something called Hi5.  It all started when I overheard a bunch of kids I definitely didn't think were cool discussing Hi5. It was a social networking site, and if even they were on it, then I was definitely missing something.  To my great chagrin, the government of UAE banned Hi5 a couple of days after I first heard of it. In fact, when I tried to search for the website and found the prohibitory banner, I rather wondered if I'd somehow precipitated this by wanting to be cooler.  Then came Orkut, where the girl I'd been steadily crushing on since I was 9 wrote me a glowing "recommendation." To be honest, booking it out of Orkut as soon as Facebook became widely available was something...

It's Blogtober and I'm 4 days late to the party already. Time for some intense backdating. I was 5 when I watched  Titanic, although I've remembered myself as being 3 for some reason. I can't say I understood everything that happened in the movie - whatever happened with the place that had all the vintage car stuff was a complete mystery, and I'm pretty sure Dubai censorship rules are the reason I never realized Jack's painting was a nude painting. But there's a reason why the movie was hailed the way it was - and still is. And that is the sense of something so vast and inescapable. The sense of watching a tragedy unfold in real time, and being made to feel helpless by it. Something like that is incredibly tragic. Watching men self-destruct in real time, on the other hand, is tragicomic. My friend watched me laugh as I compared a couple of people I've dated - their patterns of self-destructive behaviours, their detachment, the utter hopelessnes...

Shades of Blue

Vengeance writ  In shades of blue  These cuts strike deep And ink bleeds through  The maelstrom fades Time slows to a halt  Anger crystallizing/ The better These wounds to salt  Would have grown Apart/ Memories dissolving  But the fields ran red With frozen hope shattering Cobalt calls/ Ruby restless A growl emanating from the depths Of ages past/ Of process thwarted And Azure shifts/ while Copper flows

Throwback: Waltzing to the Tune of Rhetoric

Written September 7, 2010 A dark series of squiggles make their way down and across the page, in that order. Cheap poetry and lame jokes are the order of the day. For once the silence has retreated and is content to watch from the top row of the bleachers. For once there's no raining on the court while the ball's in play. There's a rose that lies at the back of my locker, wilted and fading away. It's a rose I don't expect to see in bloom again. It's a rose I've put aside, but one I cannot bear to throw away. Perhaps I should consign it to the bonfire I've made in my backyard, out of all the relics from the past. Perhaps keeping it in my locker is dangerous, for it might bloom again. Roses such as this one have been known to bloom more beautiful than before, long long after they withered away into nothing more than thin brown sticks and faded and detached petals. And in my excitement, I might just reach out and grab it again, forgetting th...

Comic Sans Lover

As evening fell and darkened into a not-unpleasant kind of night, I watched a cute guy talk about how his trainee would probably mess up if he didn't immediately clarify things for him. And all I could think of was Praveen. Cut to a month or so ago, when I was at my CCD with Praveen's boss, who wouldn't stop talking about Praveen. "So I walked into office one day," said Praveen's Boss, "in a fairly good mood. And I hear this guy say 'Kannada Gothilla.' And I didn't know what came over me, but I just said, 'Praveen, return his advance and tell him his car is not available.' And the client protested, since the car was waiting for him outside and he could see that. I ignored him and went inside. So the client asked Praveen what was wrong with his boss. And Praveen is such a funny guy, he just said straight up, 'I've been working for him for several years now, and I still don't understand anything he says. He's just insan...

The Clamour of War

Crosspost: Aftertaste by Namita Devidayal

Image
Crossposted from Feminist Quill , written December 18, 2015 Title: Aftertaste Author:  Namita Devidayal Year of Publication:  2011 Series: N/A #: N/A Goodreads Rating (Avg.): 2.96 Goodreads Rating (Mine):  4 Spoiler Alert Might I start off by saying that I  cannot believe this book has a average Goodreads rating of below 3, when  SO MANY terrible books are rated 4 and 5 out of 5 stars? Plot Description:    The powerful matriarch of a wealthy business family (they sell sweets) has suffered a strke, and lies dying.  Aftertaste  is the story of how her children and her children-in-law deal with her impending death, while also fending off personal troubles of their own. In addition to metaphorical interpretations, the title also directly refers to the theme of Indian sweets that runs through the book in the form of the Todarmal's business. The one word I'd use to describe this book is "stark". Stark as in "stark realit...

Ashes of Winter: Dancers In My Soul

Cruelty Wears the Guise of Fear

The funerals were over, and the last of the mourners had trailed away. They would go home, where food and drinks and lighter conversation awaited them. Catharsis. They all craved it, and laughter seemed the inevitable aftermath of a funeral. They'd wanted her to come with them, had wanted to hang around with her, anxious, sensitive to the fact that her pain were greater than anything they could feel. She'd wanted to stay, she'd wanted to be alone. Catharsis seemed too unrealistic a goal right now. She closed her eyes, plugged her headphones in and sat cross legged, leaning against the cemetery wall. Far enough away from the graves that distance would be felt, but still close - too close. It was hard to say how much time had passed - certainly the song had played itself in its loop quite a few times - when she felt something scuttle across her fingers. She hated insects. Wasn't used to them, hadn't grown up with them, was creeped out by most of them. She wait...

Ashes of Winter: A Vile Wind

Ashes of Winter Chapter 1: Ice Age

Comfy Pillows for the Broken Heart

Written September 11, 2010. Yesterday As I set off Back down the path That leads to sleep And comfy pillows I was tempted To turn around Look back, maybe For it was well past The witching hour Who knows What I might have found Who knows What expression I might have caught On your face, offguard Was it merely the dream Of the late hour The magic that hung Deliberate, in the air Has made me hungry again Hungry for Hope Something that makes me want To reopen the wound So recently healed I'm more sensible Than witching hours and magic This I'll have you know That's why I headed straight down That road that lead To sleep and comfy pillows

Sweet Summer Child: A Love Letter

Image
Photo by  Petr Ovralov  on  Unsplash Written December 9, 2016 I am not a gifting person. Years ago, someone suggested I write them something about love as a gift instead. I made many starts, completed nothing. Perhaps happiness doesn't inspire me the way sorrow does. Then last year came the first and only love letter I've ever written. Does it mean more if you write letters? May I? Dearest. When I met you, the only taste I remembered any more was the taste of ashes in my mouth. When I met you, the sun had cracked open, and loss was everywhere.  When I met you, you were a shadow, hidden among shadows, a nervous joke whispered on the winds of my thoughts.  When I met you, I was looking for a friend.  Then I met you, and the sun rose again, whole and healthier than before.  I met you, and the joke turned to undying laughter on my lips.  I met you, and I knew longing again, my soul unable to bear its weight.  I did not know...
